NDLEA Kano State Command Records Landmark Achievements in 2024

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command has reported significant accomplishments in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse during the past year. Under the leadership of Commander AI Ahmad, the command successfully dismantled drug networks, prosecuted offenders, and rehabilitated addicts, setting a commendable standard for drug law enforcement.

Arrests and Seizures

The command arrested 1,345 suspects, comprising 1,301 males and 44 females, and seized 8,430.239 kilograms of assorted illicit substances. Notable confiscations included over 5 million tablets of Tramadol intercepted along the Zaria-Kano Road, effectively disrupting supply chains. These efforts underscore the command’s unwavering commitment to reducing drug availability in Kano State.

One high-profile arrest was Lawan Sani Hobe, apprehended after a 10-month manhunt for attacking an NDLEA officer. Hobe’s conviction and five-year prison sentence highlight the agency’s resolve to bring perpetrators to justice.

Strategic Operations and Convictions

The introduction of “Operation Hana Maye” dismantled over 20 drug dens in notorious areas such as Filin Idi, Dan Agundi, and Sani Abacha Stadium. These operations have created safer environments for Kano residents.

In 2024, the command secured 128 convictions, including a landmark case involving 12 drug peddlers arrested at Filin Idi, who were sentenced to three years in prison each. Other major convictions include: Ibrahim Tahir: 9 years, James Temitope Ajayi: 7 years, Adekunle Sunday Adebayo: 6 years, Salisu Mohammed, a dismissed police inspector and repeat offender: 5 years.

The command also dealt with a violent incident where Abubakar Muazu attacked an officer during his arrest. Despite the risks, Muazu was apprehended, prosecuted, and convicted.

Community Initiatives and Rehabilitation

The NDLEA conducted 207 anti-drug campaigns targeting schools, community leaders, and public spaces, raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. The command also introduced drug integrity tests for local government election candidates, promoting responsible leadership.

In 2024, 101 drug addicts were admitted into the command’s rehabilitation program, with several completing their treatment and reintegrating into society. This initiative addresses not only the physical aspects of addiction but also the underlying psychological and emotional issues.

Other Highlights

The command conducted 202 visa clearance tests and 1,114 drug integrity tests, demonstrating its commitment to national security and public health.

Commendations and Future Plans

Commander AI Ahmad extends gratitude to NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and other stakeholders for their support. He praises the officers and men of the command for their dedication, which has been pivotal to the year’s successes.
