Oyo, Ogun Declare Wednesday Public Holiday for Isese Day
Governors of Oyo and Ogun States have declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day celebration.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde, through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, announced that the holiday was approved to give traditional religion worshippers and other residents the opportunity to mark the occasion. He urged citizens to use the day for reflection and prayers for peace, unity, and stability in Oyo State and across Nigeria.
The state government further directed that the governor’s approval be widely publicized to ensure civil servants and residents are duly informed.
Similarly, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, reaffirmed the recognition of August 20 as a public holiday, following its formal declaration in 2023 after approval by the Ogun State House of Assembly.
The Ogun State government described the celebration as a recognition of the vital role of Yoruba heritage and spirituality in the state’s cultural identity. According to the statement, Isese Day offers adherents of the Yoruba religion an opportunity to honour their ancestors, perform traditional rites, and promote the values embedded in their spiritual practices.
The government added that beyond its spiritual importance, the celebration fosters community among practitioners and invites wider society to appreciate the richness of Yoruba traditions and their contribution to Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
