Chrissy Teigen Has Ignited an Important Conversation Around Miscarriage

Last night, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend revealed that they lost their child following pregnancy complications.

In an emotional post on Instagram, the model and author shared intimate, black-and-white photographs of herself and Legend in her hospital bed. “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions,” she wrote in the caption. “It just wasn’t enough.” Earlier this week, Teigen said that she had been hospitalized on Sunday night to receive two blood transfusions for severe bleeding.

The couple—who have two children together, Luna, four, and Miles, two—revealed that they had named their child Jack. “To our Jack—I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive,” she continued. “We will always love you.”

Teigen went on to thank everyone who has been sending “positive energy” to their family during this incredibly challenging time. “We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience,” she wrote. “But everyday [sic] can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”

Since opening up about her experience, Teigen has received an outpouring of support on Twitter, with many women crediting her for bravely sharing her grief, as well as shedding light on an issue that’s far more common than people realize.

According to the nonprofit maternal and infant health organization March of Dimes, for women who know they’re pregnant, about 10 to 15 in 100 pregnancies end in miscarriage, with most pregnancy loss happening in the first trimester, before the 12th week of pregnancy. Too often, pregnancy loss is a taboo topic, leaving women who have experienced it suffering in silence. By sharing her experience, Teigen is not only shedding light on just how common miscarriage is, but helping to end the stigma around talking about it.

“Women rarely speak about these experiences as they often occur prior to when they would typically start sharing the news of their pregnancy,” explains Lauren Bishop, M.D., a fertility specialist at the Columbia University Fertility Center. “Therefore, oftentimes women may feel very alone, that they are the only ones experiencing such tragic outcomes.”

When high-profile women like Teigen share their experience of pregnancy loss, it helps to bring awareness to this common, yet devastating outcome. “Hopefully, by sharing their experiences, women will start having open conversations about miscarriage and find comfort in speaking with friends and family members,” says Bishop.

Throughout her motherhood journey, Teigen has been candid about the mental and physical hurdles she’s faced, from undergoing IVF treatments to her struggles with postpartum depression. In the face of unimaginable loss, she continues to help other women feel less alone.
