Emefiele said the management of the apex bank had decided to replace bottled water with re-usable water dispensers The United Nations on the World Environment Day broke the sad news that by 20150, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. That’s scares you, right? If it did, you are not alone. The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele is also concerned and he wants something to be done about plastic waste in Nigeria. On Tuesday, during an event to celebrate the World Environment Day, WED which was held at the apex bank’s headquarters in Abuja, Emefiele said Nigeria needs a better plastic waste management system. The theme of this year’s celebration of the WED was: ‘Beat plastic pollution’. According to him, plastic is a global problem as it makes up 85% of marine waste. Quoting statistics from the World Economic Forum, the CBN governor stated that as of 2016, only 14% of plastic packaging was collected for recycling globally, resulting in a loss of between $80 billion and $120 billion annually. In recognition of the negative impact of plastic waste on the economy, he said the management of the CBN has decided to replace bottled water with re-usable water dispensers. He also said that the bank had approved the recycling of paper waste into tissue paper, which would be donated to the society as part of its corporate social responsibility.
