Christians React to Kaduna Gov’s Choice of Muslim Running Mate
Christians in Kaduna State have reacted to Governor Nasir El’rufai’s choice of picking a Muslim as his running mate for next year’s election. DAILY POST reports that Governor El’rufai had made his decision known to the public on Friday, when he publicized Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate for the 2019 general election. Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and leadership of Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) have reacted by saying no one will pull Kaduna State along religious lines. SOKAPU President, Barr. Solomon Musa, while speaking to journalists said that only electorates can decide who govern them in 2019, he said, “It is the prerogative of anyone aspiring for public office to choose whoever he wants as his running mate, the incumbent governor has the right to pick anybody of his choice. Remember it is not only one party that is in Kaduna State, there are so many other parties. “What we are hoping is that Kaduna State and southern Kaduna should never be polarized along religious line. So, if anybody decides to polarize Kaduna State along religious line that again is that person’s prerogative.” Reacting, the Kaduna State chapter Secretary of CAN, Sunday Ibrahim said, “It has never happened in Kaduna State for people of the same faith to govern the state. The electorates are those who will decide and not me.” Balarabe was born in 1966 and hails from Sanga Local Government in Southern Kaduna senatorial district. Following the development, it was also gathered that the current Deputy Governor of the State, Barnabas Yusuf Bala, has chosen to move to the National Assembly as such emerged as the All Progressives Congress, (APC) candidate for Kaduna South District.
