WHO DO WE CONSULT ABOUT NIGERIA'S PROBLEMS?
THE MOMENT OF NATIONAL HEALING WHO DO WE CONSULT ABOUT NIGERIA? The answer to the above question is not far- fetched. We as Nigerians are wired to live together in as much as we are humans and not animals. Even in the animal kingdom, animals live in habitats and that represents a geographical location that agrees with the biological components of different animals. 59 years is quite a long time enough for human beings who are progressive and perceptive to understand those factors that bring them together and those that separate them.it is the understanding of how to manage those factors of unity and those of disunity that is key in effective nationhood. From observation, it is crystal-clear that information dearth is the main problem militating against the progress of our country Nigeria. Uninformed citizens are not capable of moving in progressive directions, because to be uninformed is to be without a vision, and where there is no vision the people cast off restraint. The interview of our revered elder statesmen in persons of Alhaji Tanko Yakassai and Chief Edwin Clark on Channels TV and in commemoration of the 59th independence celebration of Nigeria provides instructive and progressive ideas that certainly can move the country Nigeria forward. These great men of honor and dignity both agreed on one thing even in the face of divergent opinions on others, that the restructuring of Nigeria as a country is the surest way forward. Why this issue of restructuring has remained a hard nut to crack is first and foremost the selfish interest of the northern elites who nurse the fear that following that route constitute the loss of the rights and privileges they have hitherto enjoyed in the monopoly of the benefits accruing from their the dominance of their uninformed people in matters of politics and governance. This line of thought is parochial and retrogressive in every sense of it. To achieve their selfish desire, they create in their people the fear that restructuring is an attempt by the other regions of the country who are privilege and more endowed in natural resources to keep them away from their share of the national cake. Another possible hinderance is from the attitude of some political elite, this time from across the country who for a long time now have been recycling themselves in political positions and perpetuating themselves in the corridor of power. They don’t want to quit and hate change with passion. The best way to approach the greatest problem of Nigeria which is information dearth is to take advantage of every opportunity that we have or that can be created to get Nigerians especially the majority of people who are vulnerable and uninformed connected to sources of information. Until we get this done, nothing can work in the country. The pertinent question to ask ourselves at this juncture is how do we get this task done and where do we begin? Remember that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Voice of America (VOA) have for a long time been helping the Northerners in the dissemination of information in the native Hausa language and that is why a typical Hausa man, no matter how poor he or she may be, affording to own a radio sets just for the purpose of connecting with happenings around the world is more than certain. We have discovered where the major problem is now and putting all heads under the same thinking cap is a means to an end, but the end is to work out our salvation with all our might and sincerity of purpose.
