THE IMPLICATION OF THE DEATH OF THE MOST WANTED TERRORIST IN THE WORLD ON NIGERIA
THE IMPLICATION OF THE DEATH OF THE MOST WANTED TERRORIST IN THE WORLD ON NIGERIA Eighteen years after the killing of Osama bin Laden, the founder and first leader of the Islamist terrorist group, Al-Qaeda, by the United State special military squad on May 2, 2011 to be precise, President Trump announced the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Sunday October 27, 2019. This feat is remarkable and outstanding for it create new hope not only to Americans but to all peace-loving citizens of the world. The victory is also significant for it is a wake-up call to world leaders especially Africans who pay a lip service to the issue of terrorism and with little or nothing to show for their efforts in the fight against Boko-haram insurgencies. Rather than take the bull by the horns and call spade a spade, the African leaders especially President Muhammadu Buhari are in the business of finding excuses as to why the war against terrorism has failed to yield the desired result in spite of the huge amount of the tax payer’s money being spent. Another notable issue of concern is that terrorism in the world has always been associated with Muslim personalities thereby making Islam fits in contrarily to the general belief that it is a religion of peace. It is important to commend the efforts of the American government and appreciate their resilience in the fight against terrorism. The killings of both Osama Bin Laden and the ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi were carried out outside the shores of America in Pakistan and Syria respectively. The understanding and lesson gained from these feats is that it won’t be wrong to say that the enemies that the Nigerian leaders are chasing after and outside the shores of the country should have been sought for from within the country. Nigerians are their own enemies and until you conquer yourself from within yourself, you cannot conquer yourself from without. The seemingly intractable problem of insurgencies in Nigeria as well as the menace of kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and others are not the peculiarity of Nigeria as a country but the choice of the leaders who in themselves are terrorist. Any house that is divided against itself will never stand. It is time for all well-meaning Nigerians to wake up from their slumbers and appreciate the fact that patriotism is the answer to the numerous problems that we are faced with right now. A lesson from Americas victory in the war against terrorism is a lesson for all. Is Islam truly a religion of peace? This is food for though. God bless Nigeria
