IMPLICATIONS OF THE FAKE NEWS AND HATE SPEECH AGENDA ON NIGERIANS

Many have reacted against the move of the Federal Government of Nigeria to promulgate laws aimed at reducing the menace of what they describe as Fake News and Hate Speech.  While many or the majority of Nigerians see it as draconian  which in their own opinion is an act that tries to duplicate the existing laws which cater for the defermation  of character, others see the development not from the perspective of Tyranny but from the regulatory perspective which they believe will make Nigerians more responsible and focused more than they have ever been.  In our own judgement,  we see the move as fitting for description as both tyrannical,  precautionary and regulatory.  We have observed for a long time now the activities in our churches especially the mega ones who could afford to broadcast their messages around the world, that their pulpits had almost been turned into a political platform where instead of concentrating fully on their main assignments of preaching the world of faith, their members had almost been reduced to the level of the kindergartens kids  and uninformed citizens who should be told what to do and what to believe not just about the Gospel but about happenings around them.  Most of the times, churches were seen as divided along the lines of political parties.  This was unhealthy and a reflection of the situation in which most of our religious organizations were in their thinking, actions and reactions to the situation of our country Nigeria.  The position of the faith based organization such as the Nigerian Islamic Movement under the leadership of Ibrahim Yaquob  El Zakzaky  can be understandable and appreciated from the point of view of those of them who have been outspoken and have carried out several protests on the street of Abuja and in other parts of the country. With an organization like this, the agenda of a religious organization that is out also to impact the political gladiators positively in the country is obvious.  Their actions have surpassed the level of Fake News and Hate Speech agenda of the Federal government.  Other religious organizations especially those who bark from within the four walls of their church building are hereby called to finetune and redirect their grievances through a channel that the Fake News and the Hate Speech agenda of the Federal Government cannot prevail on.  The long elusive unity in the country is now being challenged.  Charity begins at Home. Let all Nigerians come together as one using all the organizations both Religious and nonreligious to come together as one indivisible entity. Until we can achieve the desired unity, we will continue to be victims and not victors.  The sickness of Nigeria is not unto death if only we can locate the physician on time.  This indeed is the moment of National Healing.
