Anti-Corruption: Lagos to Pay Imams, Pastors Salaries

The plan for the engagement of Pastors and Imams and placing them on a salary structure are in top gear, the Lagos State Government has announced.

This is done in an attempt to make clerics take the lead in preaching against corruption, thereby sermonizing accountability and transparency in sectors of the country.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Abdulhakeem Abdulateef, Made the announcement in a sensitization program for clerics and scholars across the state.

The commissioner disclosed that the state government would continue its interaction with religious leaders, tasking them to be above board and to encourage their followers to shun corruption.

According to him, “We shall be willing to even engage many of them by making provision for their salaries so that they can assist government to re-orientate the people for good.”

“Imams and Pastors are believed to be men of God. So we need all of you to help encourage the right values in the society; particularly in the area of accountability and anti-corruption,” he concluded.

Mr. Umar Hadeja, Representative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), praised the body for partnering with the EFCC on the message of anti-corruption.

 

He said the EFCC would not relent in its efforts at engaging religious bodies as veritable tools to spread the gospel of war against corruption among Nigerians.
