CUSTOMS INTERCEPT AMMUNITIONS AT WAWA-BABANA BORDER

The Nigerian Custom service on Monday intercepted a truck of ammunition at Wawa-Babana border, Niger State on its way into the country from Benin Republic.

The Minna command of the Nigeria Customs Service disclosed that the Onitsha-bound Lveco truck with Lagos registration number AKD 904 X was seized carrying 200,000 live ammunition at Wawa-Babana area of Niger state, a border town with Benin Republic.

The comptroller of Kwara, Kogi and Niger State, Benjamin Binga, explained that Bukari Dauda, the driver, and Martin Anokwara, the owner of the cartridges, were apprehended along with the consignment when the truck was intercepted.

Binga said the truck on the surface was disguised to be carrying over 100 empty jerry cans but after a thorough search by the customs staff, a false bottom which was used to hide the cartridges was discovered.

He explained that checking the truck was not based on tip off but out of curiosity and the cartridges are large and will take time to count them as such they are currently working on who sent them and what purposes the cartridges were meant to serve.

The comptroller said that investigations were still on-going and the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations are established.
