Oyo State Government Drops Charges Against Prophetess Naomi Silekunola

In a surprise move, the Oyo State Government has withdrawn all charges against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The trio had faced prosecution following a devastating stampede at a children’s event in December 2024, which resulted in the loss of at least 35 young lives.

According to Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, the decision to drop the charges was made after careful consideration. Aikomo states that while the law typically takes its course in cases involving unnatural deaths, the defendants’ display of empathy and compassion toward the victims’ families played a significant role in the government’s decision.

“The essence of prosecution is not to kill or persecute people, but to serve the interest of justice. In this case, we felt it was in the best interest of justice to discontinue the charges,” Aikomo explains.

The defendants were visibly relieved as they left the courtroom on Thursday, smiling and exchanging pleasantries. The development marks the end of a lengthy and closely watched legal process.

The stampede, which occurred during a children’s festive event at Islamic High School, Bashorun, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for improved safety measures at public gatherings. The incident remains one of the most devastating in recent Oyo State history.
